James Monroe’s funeral was held on July 4, 1831, in New York City, where he had passed away at the home of his daughter. The event was marked with public honors, including a large procession attended by military units, civic organizations, and crowds of mourners. He was originally buried in New York’s Marble Cemetery, but in 1858 his remains were moved with great ceremony to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, where a grand monument was erected in his honor.
