James Madison’s funeral took place on June 29, 1836, the day after his death, at his Montpelier estate in Orange County, Virginia. The ceremony was private, attended mainly by family, neighbors, and close friends, rather than a grand state funeral in Washington, D.C. He was buried in the family cemetery at Montpelier, where his wife Dolley Madison would later be laid to rest beside him.
