Thomas Jefferson’s funeral was held on July 5, 1826, at his Monticello estate in Virginia, one day after his death. The ceremony was simple and private, attended mainly by family, close friends, and neighbors, with no elaborate public honors. He was buried in the Monticello cemetery, where a monument later marked his grave, inscribed with the three achievements he wished to be remembered for: authoring the Declaration of Independence, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and founding the University of Virginia.
